trer asked:

I’ve heard stories where wildfires have been started by carelessly discarded cigarettes, firing toy rockets into dry brush…etc. In the right conditions, even a cigarette that you thought had gone out can turn into a blazing fire. There’s signs everywhere detailing fire conditions. There’s education out there. Why are people so stupid when it comes to fire? We know Nature has no mercy when it comes to these kinds of things.

Because some people are stupid and lazy. I want to b*tch-slap any moron who flicks their cigarette out a car window around here. There should be a mother of a fine for those who get caught doing that!

    Tell me about it!!
We get stupid people around here all the time driving in there low city cars over dry grass, and wham there car starts a fire.
Or some idiot burning brush or whatever walk away and a fire starts.
We get many city people moving in and they have no clue, absolutely no clue!! city people need to stay in the city where they have regular fire stations, stay away from places that only have volunteer fire fighters.

Our fire guy here in the news paper story said the cigarette thing is a myth many fall for. Cigarettes go out before anything happens, so he said and he should no being the fire chief in our dry climate.

I smoke and I make sure I discard my cig ***** in an old soda can or astray of some sort in my car. I do believe there is a heafty fine for throwing a cig out the car window. Either way, littering is littering, whether it be a wrapper, or a cig ****. If people are old enough to smoke, they should be responsible for the safe disposal of their habits. Also, as with campfires, anyone can get dirt and throw it over embers. This is safety, people, put out your fires!!!

Because they just care about anyone or anything other than themselves and they just don’t think.

Well, if you’re talking about the so cal wildfires….then I can answer that for you.

Yes, I may be a bit biased because I live here in Los Angeles, and I absolutely love it.

Southern CA is a melting pot. We have so many different races and cultures that there are always thousands of different ways of doing things. Unfortunately, this includes both good things (food, entertainment, sports) and bad things (bad manners, driving etiquette, laws).

People like myself, who have lived in So cali all their life, are not only accustomed to wildfires, but we accept them as part of everyday life. It’s the So Cali trade off. For all the incredible things So cal gives us, the trade off is earthquakes, floods, and wildfires. We live in one of the most stunning places on earth, and we know that comes with some drawbacks. Natives know how to prevent fires, what to do and what not to do. But because we have so many immigrants, there are a lot of people who don’t know one thing about wildfires.

People from other countries and states are not used to our weather and natural disasters. They dont know how to prevent or deal with them. These are not stupid people, they are just people who have not previously been exposed to such things. it’s like throwing a toddler in a pool. If they dont know how to swim, they’ll start swallowing the water and drowning.

Most non CA natives simply do not know the first thing about wildfires.

Most wild-land fires are caused by arson, illegal burning or burning trash on a windy day. Out of all the wild-land fires each year only .3% are started by a thrown cigarette.
