As a Gold Award Project, we are taking 15 under-privilaged girls to summer camp for a week. We will teach them fire safety, healthy eating, weather warnings, cooking safety, and stranger danger. Monday through Wednesday we will teach them what they need to know from 9-3. Thurdsday and Friday, we will put what they have learned, to use at a real camp ground. If you have any ideas about any of the above topics, please let me know.

Invite specialists, ie Firemen with their engine, ambulance officers, dieticians, cooks, police, rangers etc. Then you could have your own fire drill with evacuation plan, cooking a meal together, hiking, etc. Good luck and have fun.

You can never start teaching people to early about fire safety. Somethings you may want to talk about are:

    1) If you see or smell smoke get as low to the ground as possible and start crawling towards the exit.

    2) Before opening any doors be sure to check them for heat with the back of your hand. If the door is hot it is the natural human response to pull your hand back towards the body. Never use the front of your hand as its defense is to close and if you grab a hot door knob you will only grab the knob tighter.

    3) Set up a meeting point to meet your family at as you may all take different routes to exit the building. Using something like the neighbors driveway, your mail box, etc. This way you can find your family easier and will be able to report to the firefighters if anyone is missing. In a fire seconds and minutes can mean the difference between life and death.

    4) Have their parents show them all the exits from their room and home. Primary and secondary as some maybe blocked during escape.

    5) If your are on fire teach them about stop, drop, and roll. This will somother the flames and put them out.

These are what I can think of off hand. To get more information contact your local fire department or county fire service. They typically have a lot of information to give you and if you give them enough of a heads up, they might even come and help with the demostration.

when u teach them it would be nice 2 show them maybe a play or something that will make them understand fire but at the same time have them paying attention and interesting. Make sure they kno its seriouse.
